Lanzarote is the most volcanic island in the Canarias: located to the Northeast of the archipelago. Its scarce height impedes retention of the humidity contained within the trade winds. This characteristic impedes the existence of rain. With no rain, erosion is minimal and the landscape of this island has barely changed since the volcanic eruption.
In the Mountains of Fire (Montañas de Fuego) is the Timafaya National park. This formation is the result of the eruption of some 100 volcanoes. The administration of the National Park organises walking and coach excursions around the area.
